Hardened Tartar Buildup

  • The Problem: When plaque (a sticky film of bacteria) is left on the teeth for too long, it mixes with minerals in saliva and hardens into a bone-like substance called calculus or tartar.

  • Why home care fails: Once tartar forms, it is literally cemented to the teeth. No toothbrush, dental floss, or mouthwash can remove it. Patients seek scaling because it requires a dentist’s specialized ultrasonic scalers to safely chip this hardened crust away.

The Cause: Tartar acts like a rough sponge, trapping millions of foul-smelling bacteria underneath the gumline. People look to scaling and polishing to thoroughly deep-clean these hidden bacterial traps and achieve genuinely fresh breath.

Scaling and Polishing FAQs

Scaling and polishing is a routine dental procedure designed to keep your teeth and gums thoroughly clean. Scaling involves using specialized dental instruments to carefully remove plaque and hardened tartar (calculus) from the surfaces of your teeth and beneath the gumline. Polishing follows to remove superficial stains and smooth out the surface of your teeth, making it harder for plaque to build up in the future. It is essential for preventing gum disease, cavities, and bad breath.

For most people with healthy gums, it is recommended to get a professional cleaning every 6 months. However, if you have a history of gum disease, smoke, or are prone to heavy tartar buildup, your dentist or dental hygienist might recommend visits every 3 to 4 months to keep your oral health on track.

Generally, the procedure is not painful, though you may feel a scraping sensation or slight vibrations during the scaling phase. If you have sensitive teeth or inflamed gums due to mild gingivitis, you might experience minor, temporary discomfort. If you are anxious or have highly sensitive teeth, let your hygienist know—they can apply a numbing gel or local anesthetic to ensure you are completely comfortable.

While it is not a chemical whitening treatment, polishing does effectively remove external stains caused by coffee, tea, red wine, tobacco, and certain foods. This can restore your teeth to their natural shade, making your smile look noticeably brighter, cleaner, and refreshed.

While regular brushing and flossing are excellent for removing soft plaque, they cannot remove tartar once it has hardened onto your teeth. Tartar binds tightly to the enamel and can only be safely removed by a trained dental professional using ultrasonic and manual scaling instruments. Leaving tartar on your teeth can lead to gum recession and periodontal disease over time.

It is completely normal for your teeth to feel slightly sensitive to hot, cold, or sweet flavors for a day or two after a thorough cleaning, especially if a lot of tartar was removed. Your gums might also feel slightly tender. We recommend avoiding highly colored foods and drinks (like berries, coffee, or curry) for at least 24 hours to prevent staining your newly polished teeth. You can resume regular brushing and flossing right away, using a soft-bristled toothbrush.
