Fixed Braces
How Fixed Braces Work
Fixed braces use small brackets glued to your teeth and a thin wire that gently shifts them into place. The wire is held in position using metal ties, colored plastic bands, or built-in clips. Brackets come in metal or tooth-colored ceramic and plastic. While standard braces go on the front of your teeth, lingual braces go on the back.
In some cases, removable braces are used for growing patients or those who still have baby teeth to help align the jaw and fix bite issues.
What to Expect During Treatment
First Visit
Your orthodontist takes X-rays, photos, and impressions of your teeth to build a personalized treatment plan. If your mouth is crowded, some teeth may need to be removed right before or after getting your braces.
Second Visit
You will discuss your treatment plan and choose the right option for your teeth. Small plastic rings called separators are placed between your back teeth for a week to make room for metal bands.
Third and Fourth Visits
The bands and brackets are glued to your teeth, and the wire is placed.
Regular Follow-ups (Every 4 to 8 Weeks)
You will visit your orthodontist to get your braces adjusted. This involves changing wires or adding elastics and springs.
Important: Accessories like rubber bands, headgear, or bite plates help pull your teeth into proper alignment. Always wear them exactly as instructed to keep your treatment moving forward smoothly.
Braces Removal and Aftercare
Once your teeth are fully aligned, your braces are taken off, the glue is cleaned away, and your teeth are polished. You will then get custom retainers to keep your teeth from shifting back.
Treatment Duration
Treatment usually takes two to three years. Attending your appointments every 4 to 8 weeks helps keep your progress on track.
